Two towns, the chalk under them and the vines between them. Weighing up a
Champagne France tour? These are the places the day takes you.
The first frames are Reims: the west front of Reims Cathedral at dusk and in full sun, the
cathedral from the side above an equestrian statue, and the Basilica of Saint-Remi with its
two towers. A street with tram tracks in the grass closes the set, a Gothic tower at its
end.
Then you go under the ground. A chalk gallery runs off under a single lamp, riddling racks
line a lit tunnel, and bottles age in rows on the floor of a chalk pit. The iron gate of the
Mumm cellars and a row of its bottles, from the quarter bottle to the Salmanazar, close that
part.
Épernay comes next, with Moët & Chandon's Orangerie and courtyard lit at night and the
statue of Dom Pérignon, cellar master of the abbey at Hautvillers. A bottle of Veuve
Clicquot in a bucket of ice, a wooden press and a line of bottles on a tasting table
follow. The set ends in the vines: rows at
sunset, a windmill above autumn leaves, a Route touristique du Champagne sign, white grapes,
and an electric bike parked above a valley.
