A champagne day is half underground and half in the vines. The cellars stay at 10 to 12 °C whatever the season, so the weather outside decides the rest: the bike, the walk and what you wear on the stairs. Match your Champagne France tour to the month.

What the weather does to a champagne day

The cellars never change. champagne.fr puts them at 10 to 12 °C, with 90 to 100% humidity, in every month. So in July you go from 25 °C in the vines to 11 °C on the stairs, and you need a layer.

Above ground, the weather changes the format. The e-bike days switch to a minibus in bad weather or on black ice, as À La Française's listings say. They advise gloves in the cold months and sun cream in summer. The jeep in Épernay is covered, but the open-top bus is outdoors, so you dress for the sky. In a car or a van, rain costs you only the walk in the rows.

Late spring and early autumn are the easy choice. From May to September, highs run from 19 °C to 25 °C, frost is gone, and every big house opens. July and August are the warmest, with about 14 and 13 days reaching 25 °C.

Winter is not the wet season you might expect. December is the wettest month, at about 86 mm, but the spread across the year is narrow: April, the driest, still gets about 46 mm. The real winter cost is the calendar, not the rain. Veuve Clicquot and the cathedral towers close, and frost comes on about 12 nights in January.

If you are here for the vines, come from June to October. If you are here for the cellars alone, any month works, and the dates on when to visit Champagne matter more than the forecast.

Best time of day

In summer, take the vineyard part in the morning. The e-bike from Épernay leaves at 9:35 and the Reims one at 9:00, so you ride before the afternoon heat and go underground after lunch. In winter, reverse it: cellars in the morning, the vines in the brief warmest hours after noon.

For photographs of the rows, the late afternoon light is the one you want. The grower half days from Reims run in the morning and the afternoon. So choose the afternoon one if you care about the light, and the morning one if you want the rest of the day free.
