Where you sleep decides which tours you can join without a taxi. Most shared days meet on the Reims station square, the short formats leave Épernay's tourist office, and the Paris days collect you in the city. Choose your base first, then make the Champagne France reservation.
Reims is the bigger town and the easier base. Épernay is smaller and sits in the vines. The table sets them beside a night in Paris.

Reims wins on choice: more tours, more houses on foot and the cathedral. Épernay wins on setting: you walk out of town into the vineyards. Paris wins only if you have one day.
Most shared tours meet outside the information point on the Reims Centre station square. So a bed near the station saves you a morning taxi. In 2025 the Christmas market set up a minute's walk from it, as Reims Tourisme gives it.
Watch the kerb. Reims has two tourist offices, and the tours use the station one, not the office by the cathedral. The station point closes on Sundays, but the tours meet outside it anyway. Wine Tours Paris's day meets at the cathedral's left-side gate at 9:30 instead.
From the station, the TGV reaches Paris in 45 minutes, and the Ligne des Bulles reaches Épernay in 30. The Champagne-Ardenne TGV station at Bezannes is outside the centre, linked by tram, so check which one your train uses.
In Épernay, the tourist office at 7 avenue de Champagne is the meeting point for the e-bike day at 9:35 and most other Épernay starts. From the station, you walk there in under 10 minutes, through the town-hall park. The cellars of the Avenue are all under 20 minutes on foot from the centre.
From May to October, the Esprit de Champagne shuttle leaves the tourist office for cellars and villages. It carries 8 people and runs 3 times a day, so book it at the office. Buses also run to Dizy, Aÿ, Pierry, Moussy, Chouilly and Mardeuil, and bikes are for hire near the station.
Private tours collect you, but only within a set distance. Each listing states its own, so match your hotel to it before you book.

Aÿ-Champagne Experience's listing is plain about it: Reims is outside its 6 km radius. So if you stay in Reims and want an Épernay half day, take the train and meet them at Épernay station or the tourist office.
You do not have to sleep in Champagne at all. The small-group days from Paris run $263 to $400 a head and take 10 to 11 hours, with about two hours on the road each way. Most collect you at your hotel; one leaves a café in the Ternes district at 7:00 sharp.
The trade-off is time in the cellars. A Paris day gives you a house and one or two growers. A night in Reims gives you a morning with the growers and an afternoon at a house, and no four hours in a van. Compare them on champagne tours from Paris.
The villages of the Montagne de Reims, the Vallée de la Marne and the Côte des Blancs have guest rooms and small hotels among the vines. They are quiet and close to the growers. They are also out of reach of the shared tours, which meet in the two towns. Only four villages have a halt on the Reims-Épernay line.
So stay in a village only with a car, or on a private tour that collects you inside its radius. Hautvillers, for one, is 6 km from Épernay and has no station. Before you book a room, check the pickup line of the tour you want.
