Chalk, kings and vines

About Champagne France

Champagne is a wine region about 150 km north-east of Paris, where some 34,000 ha of vines cover the slopes of 319 villages and the houses of Reims and Épernay age their bottles in chalk cellars. UNESCO listed its hillsides, houses and cellars in 2015. Join us in the cellars of Veuve Clicquot, Pommery or Moët & Chandon, or at the table of a family grower in the villages: we bring together the tours that reach both. Start with the three above.

The Champagne Houses

Each house sells its own cellar tour. Mumm, founded in 1827, has almost 25 km of cellars; Moët & Chandon has 28 km in Épernay; Ruinart's crayères reach about 40 m down. Mercier tours its 18 km by driverless train from EUR 25, and Taittinger's cellars lie 18 m underground in Gallo-Roman quarries.

Things to Do in Champagne France

Reims Cathedral is free and opens every day from 8:00, and its towers are a guided climb of 249 steps at EUR 9. In Épernay, the wine museum at Château Perrier costs EUR 10. In Hautvillers, Dom Pérignon lies in the choir of Saint-Sindulphe; the abbey buildings are private and cannot be visited.

Planning Your Visit

The TGV from Paris reaches Reims in about 45 minutes, and trains from Paris-Est reach Épernay in 1 h 20. Most shared tours meet at the information point on the Reims Centre station square, not at the tourist office by the cathedral, and it closes on Sundays. Book a house's slot before you travel.

What you will see

Named Highlights of a Champagne France Visit

What a day holds, from the chalk under Reims to the villages in the vines.

The crayères under Saint-Nicaise hill

Chalk pits turned into cellars in Reims, listed by UNESCO in 2015: Ruinart's reach about 40 m down, and Taittinger's lie 18 m underground in Gallo-Roman quarries.

Reims Cathedral

A 13th-century masterpiece of Gothic art, free to enter every day from 8:00, where the parish counts 33 kings crowned, from Louis the Pious in 816 to Charles X in 1825.

Moët & Chandon's cellars in Épernay

Moët & Chandon's visits start at EUR 48 at 18 avenue de Champagne, above 28 km of cellars.

A family grower's cellar

In the villages, a grower who makes champagne only from their own grapes prints RM, Récoltant-Manipulant, on the label, and pours it for you in their own cellar.

Hautvillers and Dom Pérignon's tomb

Dom Pérignon ran the abbey's property at Hautvillers from 1668 until 1715 and lies in the choir of the church of Saint-Sindulphe; the abbey buildings are private.

The Avenue de Champagne

The Avenue de Champagne in Épernay runs 1.5 km past the house fronts, with about 110 km of cellars beneath it.

Plan your visit

Everything You Need Before You Go

Each house sells its own cellar visit on its own website, for a set time slot: Mercier from EUR 25, Mumm from EUR 30, Lanson from EUR 32, Veuve Clicquot from EUR 36, Pommery and Moët & Chandon from EUR 48, and Ruinart at EUR 90. Reims Cathedral is free to enter, and its towers are a guided visit at EUR 9, booked online.

Plan your visit

The TGV from Paris reaches Reims in about 45 minutes, and trains from Paris-Est reach Épernay in 1 h 20. The TER between the two towns takes 30 minutes and runs every 30 minutes. Most shared Reims tours meet outside the information point on the station square, which itself closes on Sundays; in Épernay they meet at the tourist office, under 10 minutes on foot from the station.

See the map

The 2026 harvest opened between 8 and 22 August, village by village and grape by grape. Mumm opens every day from 1 May to 31 October, Veuve Clicquot every day from 29 June to 30 August, and Mercier every day from 6 April to 15 November 2026. Check a house's calendar before you fix your date.

See the year

At Météo-France's Mailly-CIVC station in the Montagne de Reims, July is the warmest month, with average highs of 24.8°C, April the driest at 45.8 mm and December the wettest at 86.4 mm. The cellars stay at 10 to 12°C in every season, so bring a warm layer even in July.

Check the months

Straight answer

Do You Need a Tour to Visit the Champagne France Houses?

Not to see one house. Every big house sells its own cellar visit online, so Champagne France tickets are the houses' own: Mercier from EUR 25, Mumm from EUR 30, Lanson from EUR 32, Veuve Clicquot from EUR 36, Pommery and Moët & Chandon from EUR 48, and Ruinart at EUR 90. The visits run to timed slots, so make your Champagne France reservation on the house's website before you travel.

Those are the Champagne France ticket prices for one house and one tasting, and Épernay's station is under 10 minutes on foot from its tourist office. A tour earns its fare when you want the family growers in the villages, a big house and a grower in the same day, or a driver so that nobody in your party drives after tasting. The champagne house tours in Reims and Épernay are compared house by house in the houses' own visits.

Choosing the Right Day for You

Start from where you are staying and who you want pouring; the right Reims France champagne tour, or Épernay or Paris day, follows from those two.

You only have a day from Paris

Minibus and private-car days leave Paris in the morning and bring you back the same evening, most with hotel pickup. Compare each Paris to Reims champagne tour by who pours and whether lunch is in the fare.

You are staying in Reims

A Reims champagne tour starts on the station square, at the cathedral or at your hotel, from an hour's tasting in the city to a full day with lunch.

You have a morning or an afternoon

Every half day champagne tour Reims sends out from its station square pours at family growers, and none puts lunch in the fare, so you eat in town before or after.

You are staying in Épernay

Épernay champagne tours leave from the tourist office at 7 avenue de Champagne or collect you nearby, by open-top bus, jeep, bike or private car.

You would rather ride

The e bike champagne tour Reims riders join leaves Reims Centre station at 9:00 am, and the Épernay ride leaves the tourist office at 9:35. Both end with lunch and four glasses at a family domaine.

You want a famous house by name

Private days are built around Veuve Clicquot, Moët & Chandon or Pommery, and most collect you where you stay. The fares are per person, from $525.

How a Champagne France Day Runs

1

Pick your town

Paris for a long day with pickup, Reims for the station-square tours, Épernay for the Avenue.

2

Meet at the kerb or your door

Shared tours meet at the Reims station square or the Épernay tourist office; private and Paris days collect you.

3

Down into the chalk

The cellars hold 10 to 12 °C all year, so a warm layer earns its place in July.

4

Taste and compare

From three glasses at a city tasting table to ten on a private day with growers.

5

Back by evening

Half days take under five hours; the Paris days run nine to eleven hours door to door.

Do you need a tour to visit the champagne houses?
Not for one house. Veuve Clicquot, Mumm, Pommery, Ruinart, Lanson, Moët & Chandon and Mercier all sell their own visits, from EUR 25 at Mercier to EUR 90 at Ruinart. A tour earns its fare for the family growers in the villages, a house and a grower in one day, or a driver so nobody drives after tasting.
Should you start a Champagne France tour in Reims or Épernay?
Reims has the cathedral, the houses on the Saint-Nicaise hill and the grower half days from the station square. Épernay has the Avenue de Champagne with Moët & Chandon and Mercier, and the short formats: the e-bike, the jeep, the open-top bus and private half days. Pick the town you will sleep in or arrive at.
Can you do a Champagne France tour from Paris?
Yes. Day trips collect you from a Paris hotel or leave a Paris café at 7 am, drive about two hours each way and last 9 to 11 hours. Or take the train: about 45 minutes by TGV to Reims, or 80 minutes direct to Épernay, and join a tour there.
What is the difference between a champagne house and a grower?
A house (NM on the label, négociant-manipulant) buys grapes, musts or wines as well as growing its own, and shows you its cellars with a house guide. A grower (RM, récoltant-manipulant) makes champagne only from its own vines, and often pours it in the family's own cellar.
Where do Reims champagne tours start?
Most shared tours meet at the tourist information point on the Reims Centre station square (Cour de la Gare), not the main tourist office by the cathedral. Private tours collect you from a hotel or station in Reims or Épernay.
Where do Épernay tours start?
In front of the Épernay tourist office at 7 avenue de Champagne, at Épernay station, or at your hotel if it is within 6 km of Épernay. The houses walk starts at the Moët & Chandon front desk.
Is lunch included on Champagne France tours?
On most full days: À La Française's Veuve Clicquot and Mumm days, Sparkling Tour's growers day, both e-bike days, and the My Winedays and GO GO Tours days from Paris. The half days, the bus, the jeep and the city tasting include no meal.
How many glasses do you taste on a champagne tour?
Six on the grower half days from Reims, seven on the Mumm day and the Épernay houses walk, and nine on the Veuve Clicquot day. The e-bike days pour four: two champagnes, a red and a ratafia. The city tasting pours three.
Is there an e-bike champagne tour?
Yes, from Reims (a 7-hour day from the station tourist office at 9 am) and from Épernay (5 hours 30 from the tourist office at 9:35 am), both with an estate visit and lunch at Le Clos Corbier. Riders need good fitness, and in bad weather the day runs by minibus.
When is the champagne harvest?
In 2026 the Comité Champagne set picking to open between 8 and 22 August, village by village. The date moves every year with the flowering, so check the year's dates before you plan around it.
Can children come on a champagne tour?
On some. The jeep and the open-top bus take all ages, and Uncork takes children but serves no alcohol under 18. À La Française's shared tours take no one under 10, and Sparkling Tour's days, the e-bikes and the city tasting are adults only.
What is the cancellation policy for Champagne France tours?
Most refund in full if you cancel at least 24 hours ahead. À La Française's private growers day and the Épernay houses walk are non-refundable, and each card says which policy its fare carries.
Which tours visit Veuve Clicquot or Moët & Chandon?
Veuve Clicquot: À La Française's full day from Reims or Épernay, Uncork's private day and Royal Journey's private day. Moët & Chandon: Uncork's and France Intense's private days, the Épernay houses walk, and GO GO Tours' Paris day (or a similar house). Several say subject to availability.
Are the champagne houses open in winter?
Not all of them. Veuve Clicquot closed from 28 December 2025 to 6 April 2026 and opens Wednesday to Sunday from 4 November 2026. Mumm opens only some days outside May to October, and Mercier goes to Wednesday to Sunday from 18 November.
