Champagne is two towns 27 km apart, with the villages on the hillsides around them. The houses sit in clusters, Reims has two tourist offices, and every tour starts at a named kerb. Get the layout straight here before you buy Champagne France tickets.

Reims: the Saint-Nicaise houses

Saint-Nicaise hill, south-east of the centre, is the Reims part of the 2015 UNESCO listing. champagne.fr counts 25 km of cellars under it. Four houses open their doors here.

Veuve Clicquot puts its visit centre 30 minutes' walk from the city centre. So if you book two houses on the hill, walk between them rather than back to town.

Reims: the central houses

Two houses stand apart from the hill. Mumm is at 34 rue du Champ de Mars, and Lanson at 66 rue de Courlancy. Each is a separate walk, so book one slot at a time and leave time between them.

Reims Cathedral sits in the centre, free to enter. The Basilica of Saint-Remi is a bus ride away, on lines 4, 6, 11 and 40.

The two Reims tourist offices

This is where most people go wrong. Reims has a main tourist office at 6 rue Rockefeller, beside the cathedral. It also has an information point on the Reims Centre station square, Cour de la Gare. Most shared tours meet outside the station one.

Walk to the station, not the cathedral. The station point closes on Sundays, public holidays and at lunchtime, but the tours meet on the square outside it anyway. So wait there, whatever the door says. The one exception is Wine Tours Paris's day, which meets at the cathedral's left-side gate at 9:30. If you are unsure, the meeting point is in your booking confirmation, and every Reims start is set out on Reims champagne tours.

Épernay and the Avenue de Champagne

Épernay is a small town, and you cross it on foot. From the station, walk straight through the town-hall park to the tourist office at 7 avenue de Champagne, in under 10 minutes. Most Épernay tours meet in front of it.

The Avenue de Champagne runs 1.5 km from there. Moët & Chandon is at number 18, Château Perrier's museum at 13, and Mercier at 68. The walking day between three houses starts at the Moët & Chandon front desk, and its houses and restaurant are all within 500 m.

Hautvillers, Aÿ and the Marne villages

Around Épernay, the villages of the Vallée de la Marne climb the slopes above the river. Hautvillers is 6 km from Épernay, with Dom Pérignon's grave in its church. Aÿ and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ are on the UNESCO list with it, for their historic vineyards.

None of these has a tourist train. Aÿ is a halt on the Reims-Épernay line, and the others you reach by car, bike or tour. Bus lines from Épernay also reach Dizy, Aÿ and Mardeuil.

The Côte des Blancs: Oger, Cramant, Chouilly

South of Épernay runs the Côte des Blancs. Chouilly, Cramant and Oger opened their 2026 harvest on 14 August. Nicolas Feuillatte's visit is in Chouilly, and it sells shuttle packages from Épernay station, so you can reach it without a car.

The four growing areas

The Union des Maisons de Champagne splits the appellation into four main areas, across about 34,000 ha and 319 crus.

Vines grow at 90 to 300 m, on slopes averaging 12%. Of the 319 crus, 17 are Grand Cru and 42 Premier Cru.
